YouTube’s Community Guidelines dictate the rules that YouTube videos should follow. These rules cover a wide range of parameters that specify the kind of content that can be shown on YouTube. So if your video violates any of these parameters, your channel will be issued a community guideline strike.

What happens when you violate a community guideline

  1. Firstly, you will receive an email stating that you have violated a guideline. You may also be notified via desktop or mobile notifications. This will include the affected video and the policies/guidelines violated by this video.
  2. The first violation is usually treated as a warning. YouTube gives you this opportunity to make yourself more aware of their guidelines so that you can avoid further strikes.
  3. If you make another violation after the initial warning, YouTube will issue your first strike. The strike lasts for 90 days, during which you won’t be allowed to upload, edit, live stream or even make changes to playlists during the first week.
  4. After your upload, edit, etc. privileges are restored. But if you violate the guidelines within the same 90-day period of the first strike, you will receive a second strike. This time too, the strike is issued for 90 days and your YouTube privileges are withdrawn for 2 weeks.
  5. During the 90-day strike period of your second strike, if you violate the guidelines again, you will be issued a third strike. This time, your channel will be permanently removed from YouTube.
  6. Each strike expires after the 90-day strike period.

What you can do if your channel gets a strike

YouTube aims to keep the content safe for all viewers. As a creator, it is your responsibility to keep your content in compliance with the YouTube policies. Here’s what you should do when you receive a strike:

  1. Read the strike notification carefully to understand the guidelines you may have violated.
  2. Go through YouTube’s Community Guidelines to know what you can and cannot include in your videos.
  3. Review your upcoming content to make sure that it follows the policies.
  4. If you think that that current strike or warning is wrongfully issued, you can appeal it.
  5. After appealing, YouTube might either remove the strike, retain the strike, or make your video age-restricted, based on the circumstances. Each strike can be appealed only once.

Familiarising yourself with YouTube’s Community Guidelines can prevent any strikes on your channel. That’s all you need to do, to keep your channel in good standing and avoid any issues!
