There are a lot of hacking incidents recently, where YouTubers have lost access to their channels and videos. Noticing this trend, YouTube has not only increased security but also made it easier to recover access to a hacked YouTube account. Here’s what you need to do if your account is hacked.
Change your password
First, change your password to prevent the hacker from causing any further disruptions to your account. To change your password, follow the steps below:
- Open the Google account page.
- In the left panel, click on “Security”.
- Scroll to the “Signing in to Google” section and click on “Password”.
- Enter your current password to verify your identity.
- Enter your new password in the given spaces and click on “Change Password”.
Many times, the hacker might change your password before you find out that it is hacked. In these cases, if you can no longer access your YouTube account, you need to first recover it.
- Open the Google Login page.
- Enter your email address and click “Next”.
- Click on “Forgot Password”.
- Follow the prompts to recover your password.
Review devices signed in to your account
- Go to your Google account page.
- In the left panel, click on “Security”.
- Scroll to the “Your devices” section and click on “Manage devices”.
- If you notice any unrecognisable device on this list, select the device and click on “Sign out”.
Now that your password is changed and you’ve signed out of unrecognisable devices, the hacker should no longer have access to your account.
Request for recovery
If you’re unable to access your Google account in any manner, you have to request Google to recover your account. Here’s how you can do that:
- Visit the Account Recovery page.
- Follow the steps by answering all the security questions asked here.
- Answer with helpful details like the last time you changed your password, your current location, the device you’re using, etc.
- If you’re unsure of any question, take your best guess and answer it instead of skipping the question.
Based on the information you provide, Google should be able to verify that this account belongs to you.
With the influx in digitisation post the onset of the pandemic, hacking has also been on the rise. Many YouTube channels are losing videos and subscribers. To prevent this from happening to you, follow all the security protocols. Act on securing and retrieving your account as soon as you find out that it has been hacked.
